The first mention of the name of the place as inter lactus Madon appears already around 1133 during the construction of the Augustinian monastery. The official naming then took place in 1891, when the railroad station and the post office were named.
Today, about 6,000 people live in Interlaken. The former village has become a center for Bernese Oberland. Before Corona, about 1.6 million tourists visited Interlaken and the surrounding area every year to explore the fantastic mountain and lake world of the Bernese Oberland – the ideal hub for excursions to the Jungfrau region.
From breathtaking mountain tours to a jet boat ride on Lake Brienz, everything is possible and, above all, easy and quick to reach. Interlaken offers a transport hub from which almost all regions of the Bernese Oberland can be visited. Attractions such as the St. Beatus Caves on Lake Thun are also easily accessible by public transport, and the trip to the capital city of Bern also takes less than an hour.
